In 1991, Michelle Knotek invited Kathy Loreno to live with her family in South Bend, Pacific County.   Loreno was to help care for Knotek's two teenage daughters and a third daughter expected to be born soon.   Loreno accepted the offer.   Loreno was in good health when she began living with the Knoteks.   Initially the Knotek family treated Loreno well.

But soon, Knotek and her husband, David Knotek,4 began abusing Loreno physically and mentally;  they continued this abuse through 1991.   Knotek and her husband (1) hit and slapped Loreno, including numerous blows to the  head;  (2) dragged her across the ground;  (3) pulled her hair;  (4) poisoned her;  (5) forced her to submit to bizarre “treatments,” such as bleach and salt to clean her wounds, and ingesting salt and prescription medications;  (6) forced her to live and to work outdoors in harsh weather conditions while minimally clothed or naked until she became hypothermic;  (7) starved her;  and (7) as punishment, forced her to immerse herself in cold water or mud.   As a result of this abuse, Loreno lost 100 pounds, her hair and teeth fell out, and she declined physically and mentally.   Near the end of her life, Loreno could not walk or talk, one side of her face drooped, her vision had declined significantly, and she was covered in vomit.

Kenneth Bianchi is a serial killer in the United States. He was active from 1977–1978 . He currently has12  proven victims, though they are only suspected of 12 . According to Wikipedia,  he killed along with accomplice Angelo Buono Jr., known as the "Hillside Stranglers" .

This happened primarily in Washington and California. He was sentenced to Sentenced to life imprisonment .

His appeal includes: In January 1979, the defendant, Kenneth A. Bianchi, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Interest in the case was heightened by speculation in the press as to a connection between the defendant and *92 unsolved homicides in another state. In order to ensure the defendant's right to a fair trial, both the prosecution and the defense moved the Superior Court for a protective order sealing the affidavit of probable cause determination. The motion was granted. The Bellingham Herald then moved to intervene for the limited purpose of contesting the order limiting access of the public and the newspaper to the affidavit of probable cause determination. The Superior Court granted the Herald's motion.

Robert Lee Yates Washington

Robert Lee Yates is a serial killer in the United States. He was active from 1975–1998 . He currently has 13 victims, though he is suspected of 18+ . According to Wikipedia, Yates was convicted of killing two women in Pierce County and sentenced to death, but his death sentences were commuted to life without parole after Washington State outlawed the death penalty in 2018. He is currently serving life in prison at the Washington State Penitentiary.

The Pierce County Murders.   Melinda Mercer turned to prostitution in November 1997 to support her heroin addiction.   She was last seen alive on the night of December 6, 1997, leaving a Seattle tavern.   According to the testimony of a friend, Mercer left the tavern to go to Aurora Avenue to make money for a heroin buy.   On the following morning, Mercer's nude body was found in some blackberry bushes in a vacant lot in Tacoma, a lot used as a dump site for garbage.   Some of her clothing had been thrown on top of her, but other items were never recovered.   An autopsy revealed that she had been shot three times in the back left side of the head.   Only one of the three bullets penetrated her brain, but it did so without affecting the areas that control consciousness and motor response.   Found nearby was a .25 caliber shell casing.   Bloodstains on her blouse indicated that she had been clothed and upright when shot in the head.   After shooting her, the killer encased her head in four plastic grocery bags.   The two outer bags contained very little blood, but blood had pooled inside the two inner bags.   Mercer's nostrils and upper lip were visible through small tears in the two inner bags, which had been partially drawn into Mercer's mouth;  the holes suggested that Mercer was alive when the bags were tied over her head and that she had used her teeth to create the holes.   Although Mercer could have died solely from the gunshot wounds, the oxygen deprivation would have hastened her death.
